Amidst
increasing poverty and a rollback of human development gains due
to HIV/AIDS and global marginalization, churches in Africa face
multiple challenges.
The
WCC's ecumenical partners in Africa include regional ecumenical
organizations, national councils of churches (NCCs), sub-regional
fellowships, the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC), and
partner agencies.
During
2002, the Africa Desk was able to channel many of its partners'
human and institutional resources into equipping the churches
to respond to these challenges.
The
desk attempted to respond with respect and sensitivity to specific
situations in the sub-regions. Within the WCC itself, 2002 was
also a year of strengthened interaction between the Africa, Middle
East and Pacific desks.
Together with churches, NCCs, sub-regional fellowships and church-related
groups and organizations in the region, during 2002 the desk worked
on:
upholding regional perspectives
effective sharing and solidarity
capacity-building
for churches and ecumenical organizations
sustainable
development amidst globalization
