Our objectives are those of the Diakonia & Solidarity team, of which the Africa desk is part:

  • To foster ecumenical partnership, just relationships and a comprehensive ecumenical response to human needs in Africa by sharing information and promoting analysis and dialogue within the WCC staff and among member churches and ecumenical partners.
  • To foster the sharing of spiritual, material, cultural and other resources among WCC member churches and ecumenical partners in and across regions by nurturing reflection and common action towards an ecumenical ethic of sharing
  • To promote dignity and sustainable life in community by nurturing ecumenical solidarity in and across regions through member churches and ecumenical partners.
  • The areas of specific responsibility are:

  • Analysis and interpretation of the political, economic, social-cultural, religious and ecumenical situation to assist the WCC and ecumenical partners in developing a comprehensive and collaborative response to the realities and priorities of the continent
  • Facilitation of platforms such as regional groups and round tables for analysis, dialogue and co-operation with regional partners and agencies involved in development and ecumenical diakonia, mediation when necessary, and the building of South-North and South-South partnerships.
  • Facilitation of human development and capacity-building to equip churches and ecumenical organizations in their ecumenical diakonia
  • Support for and strengthening of efforts by churches and church-related organizations to help communities in the daily struggle for life with dignity and to respond to the concerns of people in critical situations, including street children, women and uprooted people.
