How
to respond effectively to Africa's social, political, economic
and technological problems?
Deeming
reflection and analysis to be vital ingredients for lasting impact,
the Africa Desk attempts to offer spaces for
strategic reflection, dialogue and consultation.
Those
availing themselves of this opportunity in 2002 were churches
and NCCs facing particular difficulties, those in the process
of switching to the Round Table funding mechanism (in Lesotho,
Democratic Republic of Congo, Central Africa), and two sub-regional
fellowships (FECCLAHA and FOCCISA). |

The Greater
Horn of Africa has been the scene of most of the longest
civil conflicts in Africa. The WCC
General Secretary’s visit to North and South
Sudan, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Kenya (30 June -16 July 2002)
served to highlight the urgent need for peace and reconciliation in
this region.
In all the
countries he visited, Rev. Dr Konrad Raiser met with political as well
as church leaders; in Tanzania, he visited the UN International Criminal
Tribunal on Rwanda. A visit to Yirol in Southern Sudan was evidence
of the WCC's long-standing commitment to a just resolution of the civil
war and to a sustainable peace. (See WCC
press releases of 28 June, and 8, 10, 15 and 22 July on this visit,
and photos.)
